Sheffield’s 2011 film festival for young people has a packed programme for the public and for schools. There are brand new never-before-seen films, exciting workshops with talented actors and we’ve dug some older films and TV shows out of the archive so parents can show their kids what they used to watch!

The film and workshop programme is on offer to the general public during the two weekends (including the final screening on Fridays) and for school groups during the week.

Curating a selection of short animations suitable for family viewing is much harder than first appears! Animation is a great story telling device, and animation focused at children has often pushed the envelope addressing themes that are dark or difficult. The challenge is finding the best films that are dramatic, entertaining, engaging, maybe have a bit of an ‘ick’ factor (what child doesn’t love superheroes who need the toilet?), have an overall positive message without being too much of a parable, but which don’t have swearing, excessive violence or generally unsuitable content. There’s no formal rating system for films not on distribution so the curator has to rely on good judgement and a keen eye for detail! Oscar winning animation Logorama is a prime example – on one hand a great, lively exploration of brand ubiquity; on the other hand littered with profanity and some more dubious elements to the story! That’s definitely one for the grown ups!

Small World has drawn together a number of screening packages of family friendly animation. If you would like to take one of these packages for your own event or club, or discuss a bespoke collection just contact us to find out more.

The Bradford Animation Festival kicks into gear between 8-12 November 2011 and this year the headline star is Andy Schmidt from Pixar. Pixar continue to do amazing things with animation and summer 2011 saw the animated feature Cars 2 hit the big screens. This got us thinking at Small World Towers who might be the headliners in future years – which new animators could be the ones to watch? There’s no doubt Studio AKA continue to go from strength to strength with their mesmerising work on Lost and Found and idents for the last Winter Olympics. France benefits from investment in the animation industry and animators coming out of the main schools in Paris (The Gobelins School), Valenciennes and Arles (Supinfocom). India now boasts DSK Supinfocom which is also educating some of the best emerging talent.

Coming soon will be a submission page for up and coming animators to enter their work for our next student showcase. Maybe this will be where the next Pixar emerges? Watch this space!
